Marketing in dentistry

The dental sector is experiencing a progressive decline in turnover as a result of a decrease in the number of patients and an unusual increase in competition. We have a university system that annually injects some 1500 new dentists into the profession. Between 2001-2002 and 2009-2010 the number of students who finished their dental studies increased by 44%. There is also an extension in the professional life of dentists as well as the incorporation of new types of dental clinics (franchises, insurance companies). All these factors lead to a new emerging scenario for the practice of dentistry in Spain (and perhaps in Europe?).

Some of the main consequences of this situation are:

  • The average registered dentists in Spain is 57.67 per 100 thousand inhabitants. This statistic is 7 points above the European average, which is 50 dentists per 100 thousand inhabitants in the year 2010 (OCDE Health data 2012).
  • In 2011, 10% of dental clinics registered their liquidation.
  • The unemployment rate is more prevalent in young dentists. In 2012, 55.11% of unemployed dentists were less than 30 years old.

In the past, it was enough to be a good dentist and leave marketing up to ‘word of mouth.’ Dental clinics did not need to carry out campaigns to recruit new patients. However, nowadays these campaigns have become more essential. In this new ‘climate’ of dentistry, it will be necessary for doctors to familiarize themselves with new management capabilities, that will allow them to find new value proposals to achieve the desired loyalty of patients.

Due to these sudden changes, we believe that few dentists understand the essence of marketing. Unfortunately, a significant percentage of dentists in traditional clinics still consider online advertising as an activity that has nothing to do with them and that hides behind a commercial aspect of dentistry that they find far from good practice or that does not work for them.
